Shahab Torabian, Ph.D._
Shahab Torabian is Senior Engineer at NBM Technologies, Inc. and Associate Research Scientist (Research Faculty) at Johns Hopkins University (JHU). Shahab is NBM’s most hands-on employee. Often found in the laboratory, he pulls from his very strong foundational knowledge to build test setups that are clean and efficient. Custom, high-performance computing software used by our clients sparkles because of Shahab’s touch. He also designs buildings and structural components at the level of detail needed to actually build the structure, for example, its connections. The ability to fully visualize a building design, create simulations to study it, and devise and perform testing to confirm the model results are not often found in one person and come to Shahab as a result of his nine years of experience advancing industrial research while a design engineer in Iran: A wide variety of engineering projects were contracted to Applied Research Affairs at the University of Tehran during his terms there as Project Engineer/Manager (2003-2009) and Technical Director (2009-2012). Since 2012, Shahab has continued to expand his range through his work as post-doc/research faculty for JHU and Senior Engineer for NBM. Highlights in his experience include the design and detailing of tall steel buildings or special structures such as minarets, domes and arcs; and advanced analysis and seismic rehabilitation. Shahab is adept at using nonlinear time-history analysis, or the ASCE-41 approach in the U.S., to strengthen new and existing structures, and anticipates future work in fastener testing and behavior, fracture analysis, new diaphragm design approaches, and aluminum. Shahab also helps to direct business development and Internal Quality Assurance at NBM.
