About us

  • When did the company start?
    The Moen family, engineers and entrepreneurs, started NBM in 2006. At the time, it serviced the R&D needs of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and other federal agencies.In 2013, NBM re-launched under the helm of Dr. Cristopher Moen, who shifted its focus to structural engineering technology.

    Currently NBM has nine employees.
  • Where are you headquartered?
    NBM is headquartered in Blacksburg, VA.

    Branch offices in Hong Kong, Baltimore, New York City, and West Lafayette (near Chicago and Indianapolis) extend our reach and professional networks.

  • What does the acronym NBM stand for?
    The initials stand for Nancy Beth Moen, mother of CEO Cristopher Moen.
  • Do you do a lot of building/structures design?
    We support the engineers and industries that are performing building and structural design with knowledge, strategy, tools, simulation, and testing.
  • How do you get these projects with such different scopes and in such varied areas?
    Our training as thinkers and teachers allows us to approach and solve most physics-based problems.


  • How are academic ties integrated into NBM consulting and R&D?
    NBM cherishes the research goals of both individual innovators and R&D laboratories. As a result of our collaboration, visionaries have launched companies. Companies with knowledge gaps have arrived at critical enhancements. Regulatory agencies have resolved thorny, outstanding building code issues. New products germinate in the exciting place where our advanced knowledge meets real world problems.We have access to state-of-the-art testing laboratories and high performance computing, where we engage in specialized services integrated with our theoretical expertise. At our fingertips are the software, materials, and equipment we use in our academic research. Most of our clients have engaged us in ongoing partnerships, a testament to the personal relationship we foster.


  • Can you test xxx?
    Yes. We are experienced with designing and executing experimental programs and we have access to university laboratories around the country.
  • How do potential clients find NBM?
    The frequent attendance of our principals at industry and academic conferences is spreading awareness of our company in the research community. In other cases, clients have discovered us through our research in academic journals, even Googling a technical search term used in one of our papers.

    Most of our employees part-time as professors and continue to publish and refine engineering methods that have advanced and immediate applications for industry. In general, the cutting-edge nature of our work and the custom approach we offer goes a long way for prospects already open to outsourcing their R&D.

  • Can you sign this NDA (Non-Disclosure Agreement)?
    Yes. We sign all NDAs prior to the exploratory call we offer prospective clients.

    Prior to this step, clients typically share very simple project information and images through email or our automated form.
